Haylie’s House Tour

by Haylie

Newly engaged and eager to finally have a space of our own, my husband and I bought our first house in 2015. We had rented for years, almost moving every year. After renting house after house we continuously found ourselves inspired to add our own style to our space which was difficult when you live in a house that belongs to someone else.

So with 6 months still remaining on our lease, on a house in a less than desirable neighborhood, we got our ducks in a row and started searching. After putting in three different offers and getting out-bid each time we started to get discouraged. Then we found a house that I liked to call “beige with a side of potential.” Built in 1961, this ranch-style home was previously renovated in the 80’s and was then bought by a property management agency in 2012 and had been rented for the past 3 years. It is a cozy 1,269 sq. ft. home with 3 beds and 2 baths, an updated kitchen and a covered carport. We were sold!

Now to clarify, by updated I mean builder grade special, top to bottom. Builder grade cabinets in the kitchen and in the bathrooms. The same tile that was used for the kitchen floor was used on the floor in both bathrooms and was in the stand-in shower of the master bath. This orange, faux terra cotta printed ceramic tile was paired with a “lovely” (note the sarcasm) beige, flat finish paint color… that. covered. the. whole. house…. THE WHOLE HOUSE! Kitchen: flat beige paint. Bathrooms: flat beige paint that showed the dried dingy water marks when the walls would sweat after a shower.

It had it’s trouble areas but ultimately it was in the neighborhood we loved, it had all of the things we were looking for and most of the major updates had already taken place, but most importantly, it was ours! We were beyond excited to get started making this house our home together.

Since April 2015 we have updated the look of the house a lot.  We are just getting started but I figured an introduction was a good place to start. Be sure to check back for updates and links to all of our projects that we have done thus far.

Love the mid-century with a current edge feel. Great shifts in color…. amazing how color makes such a difference. Will you come do our place?

Haylie April 3, 2017 - 11:33 am

Thanks Colleen! I agree. A lot of the changes that have made the most impact has just been in the color choice. The lighter colors were almost a startling difference at first, especially the hallway, but now I don’t think I would have liked anything other color. I love how it has all turned out and am glad that you do too! I would love to help you with your place!!

I love what you’ve done with the house! Good luck with the blog. I’ll share it in my next newsletter, as I know most of my clients are into DIY and love to see what others have done.

Thanks Marissa! We love how the fireplace turned out and the light grey wall paint helps if feel a ton bigger! We still have plans to switch out our bookcases on either side of the fireplace and add more seating eventually so be sure to check back for updates!

Why on earth do people think beige is a great choice? Our house was beige also!! We changed that ASAP!

Haylie April 14, 2017 - 8:06 am

No clue! What got me more so than the beige was the flat paint! I hate flat paint!
