Merry Christmas friends!! Christmas is my favorite time of year for a few reasons but mostly because I believe in Christmas magic. Yes, still… I never stopped believing. I thought while I walk you through our house this year, I would share a little bit about why I find Christmas so magical.
What better place to start than with Christmas lights? I still tell people that I believe in Santa… and I get some strange looks for it; however, it’s true! I don’t know why but I never really associated Christmas with Santa, at least not the commercial-American version of Santa.
From an early age, my mom read to my sister and I this beautifully illustrated Christmas book called “The Story of Santa Claus” by Scribbler Elf. I loved it because of the pretty pictures (the budding art kid that I was). As I grew older and truly began to understand the message of the book, I began to realize, like The Grinch, perhaps Christmas meant something more.
Having been raised in the church, I knew the biblical story of Christmas but that isn’t what I’m talking about. From the annual reading from that one storybook, I learned that Christmas magic lives within you!
…And that the best magic you can make is to give a wonderful, magical experience to others. It was never about The Big Man, Po Po Gigio, Pablo Natale, Pere Noel, Chris Cringle or Santa Clause (two points if you can name the movie). I knew the logic behind it.
I knew that it was unrealistic to believe that one man could make it to all the houses in all the world in one night. Although, I also knew that just because I hadn’t seen it, didn’t mean it wasn’t true. The part that I do believe is that one man over time has made his way into nearly every home in all the world by way of legend and legacy. Just think about it. The name Santa in some form or fashion has been spoken in nearly every home in the world so he has, in a way, made it to each and every house. The very idea of St. Nicholas is that gift giving has a power and is the best form of Christmas magic. Santa Clause aside, Christmas to me was all about the feels, the music, the smells, and the sights. The whole world sparkles at this time of year. All of these things combined are what make the Holiday so magical in my eyes. Without diving too deep into my childhood, the thing that hands down convinced me of the magic of Christmas was waking up on Christmas morning to a living room filled with presents! I could have cared less who they were for but just the fact that they were there at all was purely a Christmas miracle.
My mom was a single mom raising two girls and working numerous jobs, just to provide for and support us. Year after year of tear-filled apologies from my mom, for not being able to give us all that our hearts desired, saddened me. Seeing my mom sad meant far more to me than not getting the toys I hoped for. Then on Christmas morning, my sister and I would wake up super early and sit at the top of the stairs and stare down at what ‘Santa’ had left us.
Today, I couldn’t tell you what hardly any of those gifts were but that moment of sitting at the top of the stairs, next to my sister, waiting for my mom to wake up, while looking down at the sparkly glowing tree and all the presents around our living room is the most memorable part of my childhood. It is to this day, the reason why Christmas is such a magical time to me.
My favorite time of the Christmas season is still early Christmas morning while everyone is still asleep. I go and sit on my couch, staring up at my glowing tree and remember those mornings on the steps with my sister.
Now as an adult, I try to make everyone’s Christmas around me magical. If that just means getting an unexpected goodie, or a card, or some liquid cheer and libations, I aim to make it all the more special. After all, Christmas magic lives in you and to keep it going you have to share it! So I hope that The Christmas Spirit is with you and you create some magic for your loved ones and those around you. Thanks for stopping by and allowing me to share my story of Christmas Magic. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!
